Home Foot Spa Buying Guide

Finding the right home foot spa can be a pretty subjective experience. Not all feet are created equal, and different people value certain features over others. So it’s difficult to just list X number of foot spas and say — “These are the best!” — when they may not be the best for you.

That being said, we are going to lay out the features found in foot spas on the market today, and describe what you should look for in your future home foot spa. We’ll make suggestions based on those features and you can do with them what you please.

Our goal is that you’re able to make an informed decision when purchasing the best foot spa for your home.

Basic Home Foot Spa Features

The following are the most common features you’ll find in foot spas on the market today. There are always exceptions, which we’ll get to below, but these are the basics you should get familiar with when searching for your first (or next) home foot spa. (Features listed in alphabetical order — click each to expand.)

Additives

Additives

Home Foot Spa AdditivesWhen we say additives, we’re referring to bath salts, oils, aromatherapy ingredients, and anything else you want to add to your spa to get a better soak.

What you’ll find with many home foot spas is that they don’t explicitly say one way or another whether their product is suitable for additives. That’s because there’s always the chance that additives could buildup and cause your machine to malfunction, and the manufacturers don’t want to be on the hook for giving you the okay.

Unless your foot spa clearly states not to include additives, we say go for it. Just be sure to clean your spa thoroughly after each use to prevent any buildup.

Attachments

Attachments

HomeHome Foot Spa Attachments foot spas often come with interchangeable and/or removable attachments. The three most common are pumice stones, nail brushes, and massage node attachments.

The idea is that you can pop one of these attachments on your spa and use it while soaking (or after soaking in the case of the pumice stone).

We find that they are often too small and in awkward positions, and that supplementing your spa purchase with your own desired attachments might make more sense. But, some people do like and use them often.

Base Nodes

Base Nodes

BaseHome Foot Spa Base Nodes nodes are a staple of every foot spa we reviewed. They are the small bumps on the floor of the foot spa that act as acupressure massage nodes.

Not everyone loves these, but enough people must for manufacturers to have included them on every foot spa they made.

Bubbles

Bubbles

ThisHome Foot Spa Bubbles one is pretty straightforward. Many foot spas produce air bubbles from the base of the unit that float up around your feet providing a soothing sensation.

This is another feature found in a majority of foot spas we reviewed. A very popular feature.

Circulation

Circulation

CirculationHome Foot Spa Circulation is when water jets or a waterfall feature is incorporated into the foot spa, causing the water to circulate throughout the spa.

Water circulation is very popular. If done correctly, it can provide a very soothing experience, even in the absence of a vibration or bubble massage.

Dimensions

Dimensions

TheHome Foot Spa Dimensions dimensions of a foot spa — length, width, and height — are important to consider for a few reasons.

  1. Foot fit. Will your feet fit in the spa? For most people the answer is yes, but for those with large feet you should consider the size of the foot spa before purchase.
  2. Depth of soak. Most foot spas will cover the feet and the ankles, some cover just the feet, and others extend up to give a full calf soak. If that’s important to you, check the dimensions — specifically the height — before purchase.
  3. Storage space. The truth is that foot spas are not small pieces of equipment. You need to consider that you’ll have to store this somewhere when not in use.

Heat

Heat

ThisHome Foot Spa Water Heater is an important one. Does your home foot spa come with a water heater?

Don’t be fooled! Many spas claim to have a heat maintenance feature or SMART heat feature that maintains water temperature throughout a soak. What they’re saying is if you pour hot water into your spa to begin with, it will keep it hot. We’ve found this to be factually incorrect in most cases.

If you want hot water without having to heat it up yourself beforehand, make sure you find a foot spa with an actual water heater. We’ve made that distinction below in our individual spa reviews.

It’s also important to consider the max temperature of a heated foot spa. This can range anywhere from 98 degrees to upwards of 120 degrees.

Massage

Massage

ThereHome Foot Spa Massage are many types of massage functions to consider in your home foot spa. Typically you’ll see large rollers on the base of the unit that are either manual or automatic. Sometimes there’s 1 roller per foot, sometimes 2, sometimes 3, sometimes 4.

Some lower-end models have a single, manual massage roller in the center of the spa (or no massagers at all).

Some units have a spinning pedicenter (where the aforementioned attachments connect) that allows you to attach a massage node and use the spinning feature to massage your foot.

One high-end model we reviewed had interchangeable massage attachments, allowing you to swap out the rollers for shiatsu rollers (see image above).

The bottom line is there are many massage options to consider in your home foot spa.

Portability

Portability

MostHome Foot Spa Portability home foot spas are pretty light-weight out of the box, but when filled with water some can become quite heavy.

If weight is a concern, find yourself a foot spa with a handle or wheels (or both) to make transportation easier.

Price

Price

When it comes to home foot spas, you pretty much get what you pay for. There is a clear correlation between price and average Amazon review, with the sweet spot falling in the mid-range units.

Home Foot Spa Price Correlation
Trendline of Home Foot Spa Price and Average Amazon Review.

The cheapest spas (one “$” on our price scale below) aren’t as well made, have fewer features, and none of them have water heaters.

The mid-range spas (two “$$”) are where you’ll typically find the best combination of features and quality for a reasonable price.

The high-end spas (three “$$$”) are loaded with features — some great, some unnecessary — but it’s sometimes hard to justify the price tag, especially for a first time home foot spa user.

Splash Guard

Splash Guard

TheHome Foot Spa Splash Guard splash guard is another feature found on nearly every home foot spa. It is simply the added plastic piece on top of the spa that helps prevent water from splashing out on the floor.

Some foot spas get creative with their splash guards, adding additional massage nodes or foot rests, but they are all pretty similar.

Variable Settings

Variable Settings

ThisHome Foot Spa Variable Settings is a feature typically reserved for the medium and high-end foot spas. Does the foot spa have just a simple on/off button, or does it have several, adjustable settings?

For instance, can you turn on just bubbles, or bubbles and heat, or just vibration, or all of the above?

You won’t always be in the mood for all available features (like no heat during summer) and it’s nice to be able to turn them on and off as desired.

Vibration

Vibration

LastHome Foot Spa Vibration but not least, vibration. This is another feature found on many foot spas. It is a high-frequency vibration, providing a relaxing massage-like effect on the feet. Pretty straightforward.

Bonus Features to Consider

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s get in to some of the more unique features we’ve come across. (Again, features listed in alphabetical order — click to expand.)

Additive Container

Additive Container

ThisHome Foot Spa Additive Container feature is related to the ability to use additives in your foot spa. Several spas we reviewed have an additive container built in where you can put your salts so they can dissolve without risk of clogging the machine.

This is a nice risk-management feature if you are concerned about ruining your spa with additives. It is still recommended to clean the spa thoroughly after use.

Blow Dryer

Blow Dryer

ThisHome Foot Spa Blow Dryer is an interesting feature that we only found in one foot spa. A blow dryer for drying your feet after a soak.

We haven’t reviewed this machine personally, but from what we could gather this feature wasn’t very well received.

Placing a towel on the floor for use when done soaking seems like an easier alternative. This is one of those unnecessary features in a high-end foot spa we spoke about earlier.

Bonus Inclusions

Bonus Inclusions

SomeHome Foot Spa Bonus Inclusions foot spas include “bonus” throw-ins such as pedicure kits or foot files when you purchase the spa. A nice gesture and incentive to purchase their unit, but these aren’t usually of the highest quality.

You’ll typically find this with the lower-end foot spas.

Digital Display

Digital Display

A Home Foot Spa Digital Displaydigital display is a nice touch, and one typically reserved for home foot spas that have temperature control and other variable settings.

Disposable Liners

Disposable Liners

HereHome Foot Spa Disposable Liners is another unique feature we found in only one foot spa. The ability to use disposable, sanitary liners for each foot soak.

This is a great feature for professional salon owners who want to use one of these spas in their shops for multiple clients.

It could also be good for a shared use spa at home to prevent the spreading of any fungus or infections.

Drainage

Drainage

Something Home Foot Spa Drainageyou don’t always consider when purchasing a home foot spa is how you’re going to drain it once your done. For most spas, you can just pick them up and dump them. But, if weight is an issue, you may need to find another solution.

Some spas come with drain plugs you can release when you’re done. Others have short hoses with a plug on the end. With these you can carry or wheel them outside or to the bath tub and release the plug.

Kid-Friendly

Kid-Friendly

IsHome Foot Spa Kid-Friendly the foot spa marketed as kid-friendly?

We found a couple such spas. If you are looking for something for a younger person these might be good options.

LED Lights

LED Lights

SomeHome Foot Spa LED Lights home foot spas have blue or red LED lights on the base of the unit.

Some are for ambiance, some provide “red light therapy,” and some indicate temperature. (For example, when less than XX degrees lights are blue — When greater than XX degrees lights are red.)

Remote Control

Remote Control

ThisHome Foot Spa Remote Control is an extension of the variable settings feature. Does the spa have a remote control so you can make adjustments while sitting back on your couch soaking?

Not a feature you find often, but a nice added touch when it is present.

Toe-Touch Control

Toe-Touch Control

Again,Home Foot Spa Toe-Touch Controls something you may not even think about when shopping for home foot spas, but can you control the spa with your toes? If yes, you don’t have to bend forward and make adjustments with your hand when necessary.

Foot spas with toe-touch control usually have oversized, waterproof buttons, and are typically just on/off buttons.

HoMedics FB-600 BannerSimilar to the FB-400 above, the HoMedics FB-600 Foot Spa is a relatively inexpensive option for a foot spa with a water heater. The heat function works okay but only reaches 98 degrees (compared to 115-120 range for other foot spas). Kendal FBD720 BannerThe Kendal FBD720 Foot Spa is an okay unit, if a bit overpriced. It checks a lot of boxes including heat, vibration, and bubbles, but the bubble feature is pretty weak and there is one, small, manual massage roller in the center. It’s an okay unit, but we prefer the MS0809 and MS0810 in the Kendal family of home foot spas. Get the Kendal FBD720 on Amazon.com.

Kendal FBD2535 BannerIf the 1023 is the big brother to the 720, then the Kendal FBD2535 Foot Spa is the father of the two. This is a super-deep tub with a height of 19″ which is 5″ taller than the 1023 and 4″ taller than any other foot spa we reviewed. That means you can soak more of your leg — extending up the calves — which is the main benefit of this spa over the 1023. Get the Kendal FBD2535 on Amazon.com.
